Materials for framing and kumiko

Shoji Screens Australia uses only the highest quality materials and hardware to make products that are strong and durable based on normal day-to-day use. Although traditional shoji are made from soft Japanese pines and cypress, we use beautiful Australian timbers that suit the climate and conditions in  Australia. The three main timbers used by Shoji Screens Australia include:

Tasmanian Oak – a beautiful straight grain timber with a honey colour that is perfect for a more traditional shoji appearance. It is also a perfect medium for staining.
It is our main choice of timber in that it is more abundant, sustainable and affordable.
WA Jarrah – a dark wood, native to Western Australia. This timber is used widely throughout homes in Western Australia. This wood looks very attractive against the white translucent acrylic.
Western Red Cedar – this wood is orange/red in colour and is useful for exterior and interior applications. Only one draw back it that it is very soft and can be easily marked by bumps, fingernails and rings.

Traditionally, delicate washi paper was used as the insert for shoji.
For practical reasons, Shoji Screens Australia chooses to use 3mm acrylic sheeting. The acrylic sheets are available in a matt finish. The modern acrylic sheeting is a durable, easily cleaned, long lasting product which still retains the integrity of the traditional shoji appearance and function. And you get the Kumiko designs (lattice) on both sides of your shoji.
It looks very similar to the Japanese plain shoji paper. In Japan they are also using PVC and acrylics in their new shoji.
