What are Shoji?

Shoji (pronounced Show-Jee) are a light screen consisting of a wooden framework covered with “washi” white paper, or other more durable translucent material. Shoji are widely used throughout Japanese homes as sliding room dividers and as window treatments or coverings. They can act to insulate to some degree and are sometimes used to replace curtains.
Shoji are functional pieces of artwork that are admired in Japan for the beauty of their “kumiko” wood lattice designs and their ability to attract soft filtered light to create a sense of space and yet to promote a feeling of privacy.
